Katie, 16 ans, meurt brutalement, le visage figé par la peur. Sa tante Rachel Keller, journaliste de Seattle, enquête sur cette fin dramatique et mystérieuse. Elle découvre que d'autres adolescents sont décédés le même jour que Katie, dans un même motel isolé. Sur place, Rachel met la main sur une cassette vidéo, porteuse d'une étrange malédiction : toute personne l'ayant visionnée meurt une semaine après.
